KISUMU DISTRICT SCHOOLS WATER AND SANITATION PROJECT
The project focus was in a total of six (6) schools in Kisumu West, Kisumu North, Kisumu East, Nyando and Tinderet Districts.
The main objective was to improve access to safe water and sanitation facilities at the school level to improve enrolment, retention and performance of children (especially the girls) whereas specific objectives included:
- To increase access to safe water supply through rainwater harvesting.
- To improve hygiene and sanitation within the schools through increasing space for the children in schools and reducing congestion.
- To increase hygiene and sanitation knowledge and practice amongst the children and by extension create a safe culture of hygiene within the targeted communities.
- To inculcate personal hygiene practices among the children and communities through hand washing.
- To promote water and sanitation management systems through capacity enhancement of the school management committees.
- Knowledge and skills transfer and development through training of local artisans as a means of scaling up the uptake of WASH.
Key Achievements
- Each school benefitted from two 50 cubic metre tanks,12 eco-san latrine doors with 3 urinals (2 for teachers, 5 doors for girls and 5 doors for boys and one waste composting shed).
- Improved health status of school children that reduced absenteeism, increased enrolment and improved academic performance.
- Sustainable IGA projects carried out by the School Management Committees, school administration and community members using decomposed solid-waste from the Ecosan technology.
Community Project Cycle Project:
STIPA was also commissioned by Lake Victoria South Water Services Board in 2012 to carry out the preparation and design phase in three communities through Sirwa Aulo in Kapune Location, Transmara District, Kuria Illiteracy CBO in Gokeharaka Location-Kuria District and Nyamaji CBO in Lambwe East Location-Suba District.
