COMMUNITY BASED HEALTH FINANCING PROJECT (CBHF)

Community Based Health Financing (CBHF) is a non-profit health insurance scheme targeting the informal sector, formed on the basis of an ethic of mutual aid and the collective pooling of health risks in which members participate in its management. It is governed by principles of mutual aid, risk pooling, voluntary and solidarity and aims to ensure there is improved access to health care services, improved quality of healthcare at an affordable cost, efficiency and equal service provision. CBHF aims to empower communities to meet their health financing needs through pooling of resources to pay for healthcare as a group. The schemes share the goal of finding ways to meet their health financing needs through pooled revenue collection and resource allocation decisions made by the scheme members.

Key Achievements

• There were 40 Village Peer Groups established with accumulative membership of 1,712 households across Homabay, Siaya, Kisumu and Vihiga Counties.
• A total of 8,015 beneficiaries were supported with health financing interventions through health insurance coverage.
• 180 expectant mothers (in varied trimesters of pregnancy) were mapped and enrolled onto ‘Linda Mama’ scheme managed by National Hospital Insurance Fund for free maternity health package.
• 1,712 households were reached with livelihoods activities specifically poultry (local and improved) keeping, cereals farming (sorghum & beans), local vegetables, bananas, onions and tomatoes.
• 3,360 adolescent girls were reached with information sessions on adolescent sexual and reproductive health education focusing on personal hygiene, physiological changes, menstrual hygiene and legal aid clinics.
• 360 adolescent girls from poor backgrounds were supported with menstrual hygiene products (dignity kits) and 1,265 adolescent girls were supported on facilitation of legal issues with the assistance of lawyers and community counsellor.
